I've seen both, and I've got to go with the UK Sherlock. I watched Elementary with some misgivings, but along the way I've begun to enjoy it. However, it doesn't feel very Sherlock-y, if you get my drift. What made the UK version brilliant is that it managed to incorporate classic Sherlock elements that made the books so popular with its fans. There's something to be said about Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's portrayal of Holmes and Watson in a modern setting.
My problem with Elementary is that every time I watch it I see it not as a modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, but a regular crime/detective series whose lead character is named after a famous detective and acts a bit like him. It's like House, but not in a medical field. No complaints about the acting or the stories, but the fact that I don't feel anything "Sherlock" about it makes it lose out in the contest between these two.
I think I like Shelock better, mostly because it has the full package. A lot about the original stories had to do with being in London and England and how life and science were back there - I mean, I know they traveled too, but you know - and Elementary, while is a good show, doesn't feel as Sherlock Holmes based as Sherlock does, Elementary is more Shelock inspired, I guess.
anyway, they are both good shows but I take UK's Sherlock any time.
oooowww. this is hard. they both have their own merits but i think i'm leaning more toward Sherlock (UK). i'm just not feeling Watson from Lucy Liu, i just don't feel like she captured the essence of Watson (but on the other hand i'm not an actor so what do i know about acting and finding your character in a role). however i do love the idea of having a woman play Watson, because traditionally Watson is a man and having a woman play this role kind of give Sherlock Holmes a modern twist of some sort.
BBC Sherlock! To be honest, I have not watched Elementary, but it's incredibly hard for me to imagine that I could love it more than BBC Sherlock because the latter simply blew me away. Just WOW. I can actually quote whole scenes because the dialogue is just that fantastic! Cumberbatch's Sherlock will be immortalised, definitely.
